‘We Must Act Now to Save Nigeria’ — Obi Slams Tinubu Over Insecurity, Corruption

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has issued a stark warning to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to urgently overhaul his administration’s approach to fighting corruption and insecurity.

According to Obi, both challenges are costing innocent lives and dragging Nigeria’s reputation through the mud.

In a strongly worded statement shared via his verified X handle, Obi expressed deep frustration over what he described as the normalisation of mass killings across the country.

“The regularity of bloodletting of innocent souls in our country has reduced the news value of human deaths,” Obi wrote.

He cited a wave of recent attacks to underscore how dire the situation has become:

Kano: Bomb explosion kills at least 5 people, injures many.

Plateau: 12 wedding guests killed, 11 injured.

Kebbi: 30 killed in fresh bandit attack.

Borno: Female suicide bomber kills 24 citizens.

Katsina: Bandits kill a police inspector.

“These are just the ones reported in a single day,” he said. “Many others go unreported as the violence spreads to every corner of our nation. For a country not officially at war, this is terrifying.”

Obi criticised the federal government’s muted response to these tragedies, warning that a lack of empathy and decisive leadership is fuelling public resentment.

“The grieving Nigerians are not shown any empathy by leaders. An administration that continuously allows insecurity and other vices to thrive is doing a grave disservice to the nation,” he stated.

The former Anambra governor also condemned the government’s failure to confront endemic corruption, describing the combination of graft and insecurity as a national emergency.

“The failure to decisively tackle insecurity and systemic corruption is damaging Nigeria’s international reputation, which he described as ‘real demarketing,’” Obi added.

He then called on Tinubu to take criticism as a patriotic input and act swiftly to restore peace.

“We must begin to treat insecurity as an utmost national priority… All hands must be on deck. We must act now to save our country. Nigerians deserve to live,” Obi said.

Concluding, Obi reminded Nigerian leaders that the world is watching. He urged them to rise above partisanship and face the country’s “existential threats” head-on.
