We’ve released ex-gov Okorocha from detention – Imo police

Police in Imo State, on Monday, announced the release from detention of the former governor of the state, Senator Rochas Okorocha.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Orlando Ikeokwu, disclosed this while featuring on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme on Monday morning.

Ikeokwu said Okorocha was let off the hook on Sunday night after his arrest and grilling for allegedly trespassing on a property sealed by the Imo State Government.

The property, Spring Palm Estate, is linked to the former governor’s wife, Nkechi.

But the PPRO said, “He was released later at night. If anybody is found culpable, definitely, he will be charged to court. If investigation proves that he (Okorocha) has committed an offence, he will be charged to court.”

Okorocha had on Sunday morning, along with his supporters and escorted by policemen, soldiers and personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, stormed the estate and ordered it to be unsealed.

But state government officials, who had also mobilised to the estate, clashed with Okorocha’s supporters, resulting in a free-for-all, with vehicles vandalised and many persons injured.

Okorocha had accused his predecessor, Governor Hope Uzodimma, of attacking him with “more than 1,000 thugs.

The state Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, however, dismissed Okorocha’s claim, stating that the former governor’s arrest was in line with the report of a White Paper, which indicated that the Royal Palm Estate in the state was built with taxpayers’ money and not Okorocha’s wife’s personal property.
