Wike prohibits politicians from using public schools for rallies without approval

The Governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike, signed Executive Order 21 on Friday, outlawing the use of public schools for political purposes without the state Ministry of Education’s consent.

According to him, the request for clearance must be made at least two weeks before the campaign’s start date.

He said that applicants would also deposit a N5 million caution fee should attendees damage the school’s facilities.

Governor Wike emphasised that a local council chairman has the authority to call off any gathering if permission is not requested in advance.

The governor stated this as he put into effect the State Assembly’s resolution to revoke Celestine Omehia’s status as the former governor of Rivers State.

Additionally, he issued a warning that the state administration would not tolerate political parties and their followers disturbing the peace when the elections get underway.

The Rivers State leader recommended candidates for the election of the coming year behave lawfully, sincerely, and responsibly.

He issued a warning that any school head who colludes with political parties to stage rallies without getting permission from the state government would face consequences.

In advance of the 2023 elections, Governor Wike reaffirmed his opposition to criminals and cult members using hotels and other public places as gathering places.
