Women Affairs Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim Faces Staff Revolt Over Poor Working Conditions

Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, was on Thursday, September 11, 2025, booed by staff of the ministry in Abuja as she attempted to leave her office.

The protesting workers accused the minister of neglecting their welfare and failing to provide basic working tools.

Some staff told reporters that they often used their own resources to carry out official duties.

“We don’t have working tools at all. Even a piece of paper to write with, we don’t have. And most of the time you do official assignments with your personal money,” said Anne Ojugbele, a staff of the ministry.

She added that the minister had told them she was accountable only to the President and not to the staff.

Another staff member, Alake Success, criticized the minister for being inaccessible. “This woman refused to meet with the staff. We have endured for a year. The beauty of democracy is to have access to your leader. She came with more than 25 special assistants. What we want, if possible, is that she should be posted to another ministry,” he said.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim was appointed Minister of Women Affairs in October 2024, following the removal of her predecessor, Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye.
