The National Assembly has suspended official visits to South Africa and withdrawn from legislative engagements hosted by the country over continuing attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals.
The decision followed consultations between the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives and was conveyed in a statement signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
The directive covers lawmakers, committees, officials and staff, including participation in conferences, seminars, parliamentary meetings, legislative exchanges and other engagements with South African legislative authorities, whether physical or virtual.
The National Assembly urged Pretoria to strengthen protection for Nigerians and other foreign nationals, investigate reported attacks, arrest suspects and prosecute those found culpable.

It said the measure was not intended to undermine Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with South Africa but reflected concerns over the safety and welfare of Nigerians living and doing business there.
The move follows earlier government action over the violence. Between June 10 and July 15, Nigeria evacuated 1,490 citizens from South Africa, with the final flight returning 305 Nigerians from Johannesburg to Lagos.
At bilateral talks in Abuja on July 27, Nigeria pressed Pretoria to strengthen measures protecting its citizens, while South Africa reiterated its commitment to prosecuting perpetrators.
The National Assembly’s decision adds legislative pressure to Nigeria’s diplomatic response. The suspension will remain in force until further notice.
