… meet behind closed doors in Adjohoun
Yoruba traditional rulers in Benin Republic, on Sunday, held a closed door meeting over the arrest and detention of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, in their country.
FirstNews gathered that the Yoruba royal fathers in Benin Republic converged on the Palace of Alajohoun of Adjohoun, located about 60 kilometres away from Ajase to deliberate on Igboho’s current ordeal and how to get him off the hook.
According to sources privy to the meeting, the monarchs were expected to come up with a common position on the matter with a view to interceding on Igboho’s behalf with the Beninoise government.
Impeccable sources told FirstNews that the Benin Republic Yoruba Obas’ meeting was part of the moves to get Igboho released from detention and granted asylum in their French-speaking West African country.
It was further learnt that some of the country’s Yoruba monarchs at the meeting included the Alajashe of Ajase, Port Novo; Alajohoun of Adjohoun: Onikoyi Abesan, and Oba of Seme.
On Friday, the Beninese court adjourned Igboho’s case till Monday for continuation of hearing.
But the country’s government had released Ropo, Igboho’s wife, arrested along with him last Monday at the Cadjèhoun airport in Cotonou by the International Criminal Police Organisation while trying to board a flight to Germany.
But the activist was detained by the police in Benin Republic.
During the hearing, prosecutors had told the court that Igboho was on a watchlist for alleged trafficking in arms, inciting violence that could result in social disturbance and causing disunity in Nigeria.
Yoruba leaders and monarchs have since Igboho’s arrest begun moves to rally support for the Yoruba Nation activist.
Some Yoruba monarchs in Benin Republic were in court last week when Igboho was brought before the judge.
