117 Northern Students Begin Studies in Algeria on Medicine, Engineering Scholarships

A new batch of 117 students from northern Nigeria has departed for Algeria to begin undergraduate studies in Medicine, Engineering, Computer Science, and Islamic Studies under a fully funded foreign scholarship initiative.

The group left the country on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, after a formal send-off and orientation ceremony in Bauchi, organised by the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation in collaboration with the Darika Tijjaniyya Islamic Sect and the Algerian Government.

According to the foundation’s chairman, Sayyadi Aliyu, the programme is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen educational ties between Nigeria and Algeria through the Nigeria–Algeria Bilateral Education Agreement.

He noted that the scholarships were secured to provide opportunities for young Nigerians to access quality tertiary education abroad, particularly in key professional fields that contribute to national development.

Aliyu disclosed that the foundation initially received 140 scholarship slots, but 117 candidates met all academic and documentation criteria for immediate deployment. The remaining applicants will join subsequent batches once their processing is complete.

He explained that the scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, healthcare, feeding, and other educational needs, describing it as a major step toward bridging educational gaps and reducing youth unemployment in northern Nigeria.

At the ceremony, the Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu, charged the students to be disciplined, law-abiding, and exemplary representatives of Nigeria while studying abroad. He urged them to focus on excellence and return home with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national growth.
