Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum, says the party’s survival and strength lie in a zoning arrangement that puts PDP above individual ambitions.
He said this in Abuja on Thursday, August 14, during the inauguration of the 44-member zoning committee, describing the panel as “the engine room where we lay the political foundation for the leadership of the PDP over the next four years.”
Damagum urged the committee, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, to produce a formula that reflects fairness, equity, and strategic thinking, warning that personal interests must never outweigh the party’s unity.
“The decisions you take will shape our ability to serve Nigerians, win elections, and defend the democratic values we represent.

“PDP is bigger than any individual, stronger than any momentary setback, and destined to remain a central force in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” Damaging said.
He stressed that both principal and deputy positions in the National Working Committee should be given equal importance, noting that the choices made now would also hint at which region may secure the PDP’s 2027 presidential ticket.
The zoning report is expected to be presented to the National Executive Committee on August 25.
Governor Diri promised the process would be “consultative, partner, and inclusive,” while PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman, Bala Mohammed, vowed full support from the governors, saying the party must rescue Nigeria from “years of APC woes, melancholy, hunger, and anger.”
