The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed doubts about the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a credible 2027 election.
Atiku made the comment on Friday, August 28, during an interview with BBC Hausa, where he questioned the independence of the electoral commission.
According to the former vice-president, INEC is being influenced by the Federal Government led by the All Progressives Congress, APC.
“I am not confident that INEC will do what is right because it is under the influence of the current government.
“That is why we are urging Nigerians to come out in large numbers, cast their votes, protect their votes, and ensure that their votes count,” he said.

Atiku also addressed allegations that he had become an obstacle to the G-100 initiative, a political effort seeking to unite opposition forces ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He rejected the claim, maintaining that he was among those who initiated the opposition coalition and that several of the politicians involved at the beginning remained part of the process.
“That allegation is baseless. I, Atiku Abubakar, was among those who initiated the coalition, and many of those who started this journey with me are still part of it today,” he added.
The former vice-president urged Nigerians to participate actively in the 2027 election and protect their votes, as opposition parties continue efforts to build a formidable challenge to the ruling APC.
