INEC Promises Improved 2027 Elections After Osun Poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission has promised to build on what it described as the improvements recorded during the recent Osun State governorship election as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, gave the assurance on Thursday, August 20, when a coalition of political parties, civil society groups, community leaders, youth and women organisations and other democratic stakeholders visited the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The delegation was at the commission to commend INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, and other officials for the conduct of the August 15 Osun governorship election.

Haruna, who represented Amupitan during the meeting, said the commission remained focused on delivering free, fair and credible elections and would continue to strengthen its processes.

He said, “We are committed to conducting free, fair and credible elections.

“As you agree with me, all the past elections we’ve had, each one has always been better than the one before.”

According to him, the commission would use the lessons from Osun to improve its performance in subsequent elections.

“So, consistent with that, God willing, the next general election, there will be an improvement on Osun and, ultimately, the general election itself next year, there will be an improvement,” he said.

The engagement comes as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the conduct of the Osun governorship poll likely to shape expectations about the commission’s handling of the next nationwide electoral exercise.
