Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has formally declared his intention to contest the Delta North senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okowa made the announcement at his residence in Asaba while receiving a delegation of political stakeholders from the Delta North senatorial district, also known as Anioma.
The visit, led by Delta State Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, brought together a cross-section of political leaders, including former and serving lawmakers, as well as government officials from the nine local government areas in the district.
During the meeting, a motion urging Okowa to run for the Senate was moved by Ndudi Elumelu and seconded by Nnamdi Ezechi.
The proposal received unanimous support from the delegation, which described the former governor as a seasoned administrator and consensus builder capable of delivering effective representation.
Responding to the endorsement, Okowa expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, stating that the unity demonstrated by the stakeholders left him with little choice but to accept their request.

“I feel very loved and honoured by this show of support. For the calibre of persons here and the unity of purpose demonstrated, I have no choice but to accept,” he said.
He explained that he had already been considering the move and intended to consult widely with political leaders before making a formal declaration.
According to him, the endorsement by the delegation provided the needed platform to make his intention public.
Okowa pledged to continue learning and growing in the political space, describing politics as an evolving process.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to the development of the Delta North senatorial district, promising to rely on the support of the Anioma people ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reflecting on past political decisions, the former governor acknowledged what he described as a “mistake” in supporting the emergence of Ned Nwoko as the current senator representing the district, offering an apology to the people.
The development signals an early start to political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with analysts expecting increased activity across party lines in the coming months.
