The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stands a strong chance of reclaiming power in the 2027 general election if former President Goodluck Jonathan eventually agrees to contest.
Agbedi made the remarks on Monday, August 3, during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he spoke about the party’s readiness for the next election despite its lingering internal disputes.
He maintained that the PDP remains a formidable political force and dismissed suggestions that its ongoing leadership crisis would prevent it from mounting a serious challenge in 2027.
“With former President Jonathan on the ballot, PDP will win in 2027. While we can agree that he has not mentioned running in 2027, he has also not ruled out the possibility.
“The question of whether it will be the Wike faction or the Turaki faction of the PDP that fields the party’s presidential candidate is yet to be decided. We are confident that the judgement will go our way,” he said.

Agbedi’s comments come as uncertainty continues over the PDP’s leadership tussle, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s structure and decision-making authority ahead of the elections.
The optimism surrounding Jonathan’s possible return to active politics has also fuelled speculation within the opposition, although the former president has yet to publicly declare an intention to seek the presidency.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already rejected Jonathan’s nomination submitted by the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the PDP.
The electoral commission explained that nominations for elective offices can only be processed through its official online portal in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC’s guidelines.
