21 Dead in Fiery Crash on Zaria–Kano Highway

At least 21 people were confirmed dead in a tragic road accident on Sunday morning along the Zaria–Kano expressway, near Kasuwar Dogo in the Dakatsalle area.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) revealed that the fatal collision occurred at approximately 8:23 a.m. and involved a Toyota Hummer bus with registration number KMC 171 YM and a DAF trailer marked GWL 422 ZE.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the Hummer bus was driving against the flow of traffic when it crashed head-on into the oncoming trailer, triggering a fiery explosion that consumed both vehicles.

Most of the victims were reportedly burnt beyond recognition.

“Twenty-four persons were involved in the crash. Sadly, 21 lost their lives while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” said CRC Abdullahi Labaran, the Sector Public Education Officer for FRSC Kano.

Rescue operations were swiftly launched as FRSC personnel contacted the Federal and State Fire Services.

Despite the emergency response, the fire had already caused catastrophic damage by the time help arrived.

The charred remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary, while the injured victims are receiving treatment at Garun Malam General Hospital.

Kano FRSC Sector Commander, M.B. Bature, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

He also emphasized the dangers of traffic violations and night-time travel, which he said remain major contributors to deadly crashes on Nigerian roads.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the consequences of reckless driving,” Bature said. “We urge all road users, particularly commercial drivers, to obey traffic laws, avoid dangerous overtaking, and shun wrong-way driving.”

Following the crash, FRSC operatives, police officers, and a tow truck team worked to clear the highway and restore normal traffic flow.
