70% of Tinubu’s Inner Circle Once Opposed Him — Bwala Reveals

Presidential Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, says a significant number of individuals currently working closely with President Bola Tinubu were once among those who opposed him.

Bwala made the remark on Thursday while addressing concerns over claims that some nominees on the ambassadorial list had previously criticised or campaigned against the President.

Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Bwala urged restraint, noting that the Presidency deliberately chooses not to comment on the ongoing confirmation process so as not to influence the National Assembly.

He explained that political leaders often make decisions based on discretion, adding that the dynamics of politics allow room for reconciliation.

“Those who understand politics know how toxic the environment can be,” Bwala said. “It is left for a leader to decide whether to work with individuals who opposed him or not.”

According to him, Tinubu has a long history of embracing people who once stood on the opposite side of political divides.

“More than 70 percent of those with him today had worked against him at some point,” he stated.

Bwala also recalled his first personal encounter with Tinubu on January 10 last year, noting that he attempted to apologise for avoiding earlier contact with the then–presidential candidate.

Tinubu, he said, dismissed his concerns and referenced misconceptions surrounding the Muslim–Muslim ticket.

He further revealed that Tinubu attributes his accommodating nature to lessons from his mother, who was once a leader among market women.

“She taught him that if you remain angry with everyone who offends you, one day you will wake up and have no one left to lead,” Bwala added.

The Presidential aide insisted that such guiding principles explain Tinubu’s openness to working with former adversaries, including those now being considered for ambassadorial roles.
