80th UNGA: Tinubu Pushes Case for Nigeria’s Permanent Seat

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that Nigeria’s quest for a permanent position on the United Nations Security Council is rooted in fairness, broader representation, and the push for reforms.

He made this clear in a message delivered at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, the 24th of September, 2025.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who stood in for the president, stressed Nigeria’s role as a stabilising power in Africa and its steady involvement in global peace missions.

Quoting his words: “A stabilising force in regional security and a consistent partner in global peacekeeping, our case for a permanent seat at the Security Council is a demand for fairness, for representation, and for reform that restores credibility to the very institution upon which the hope of multilateralism rests.”

Shettima headed Nigeria’s delegation to the Assembly, where the call for stronger African presence in global decision-making gained renewed attention.
