In a decisive step to revamp its presence in Nigeria’s dynamic telecom industry, 9mobile has officially rebranded to T2. The announcement was made on Friday, August 8, 2025, at a high-profile event titled Tech Meets Tenacity held at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos. This marks the company’s second major rebranding since its inception 17 years ago, following its transition from Etisalat Nigeria to 9mobile in 2017.

Obafemi Banigbe, CEO of Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited (EMTS), explained that the change goes beyond a mere name update. “This is not just a brand unveiling; it is the beginning of a whole new chapter in our history,” Banigbe said. “We are evolving into something greater, more ambitious, and better aligned with the future.”

The rebrand highlights T2’s commitment to becoming a digital-first and customer-focused organization driven by innovation. The company intends to harness technologies like artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and cloud-native platforms to deliver more personalized services and quicker product launches. Banigbe added, “We want to be a platform for possibilities—a hub for startups, creatives, remote workers, and every Nigerian aiming to achieve more.”

The event received significant government backing, with Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, in attendance. His presence underscored the federal government’s endorsement of T2’s vision to bolster Nigeria’s digital economy. The new brand identity also features a shift from the company’s traditional green color to a vibrant orange, signaling a fresh and bold direction.

This rebranding comes amid challenges faced by the company, including a decline in active subscribers, which fell to approximately 3.2 million by January 2025. To strengthen its market position, T2 has entered into a national roaming partnership with MTN Nigeria. This agreement aims to enhance network coverage and improve service quality for T2 customers, positioning the company to better compete in Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
