In a historic move set to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Algeria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the launch of Air Algérie’s inaugural direct flight service from Algiers to Abuja, commencing on April 6, 2025.

The national carrier, Air Algérie, will operate the route using a Boeing 737 aircraft, a development stemming from the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the two nations. The new service is expected to enhance connectivity, facilitate trade and investment, and boost tourism between Nigeria and Algeria.

According to a statement by the Acting Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the new route represents a significant achievement in Nigeria-Algeria relations.

“This historic development marks a significant milestone in the growing diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Algeria. It is the implementation of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between both countries, which culminated in this successful venture,” the statement read.

The Nigerian Embassy in Algiers played a key role in securing the flight service, and the Federal Government has extended its congratulations to Air Algérie, pledging full support to ensure the sustainability of the route.

Boosting Trade, Tourism, and Business Connectivity
The inaugural flight will carry dignitaries, including the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers, representatives of the Algerian government, and Nigerian community leaders.

Beyond strengthening diplomatic ties, the direct flight is expected to provide Nigerian travelers with an affordable and efficient gateway to Europe, given Algeria’s strategic location. The statement highlighted that this will position Nigeria as a regional hub for business, transit, and tourism.

“The affordable fare structure and Algeria’s proximity to Europe would provide Nigerians with a convenient gateway to Europe, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s position as a regional hub for business, tourism, and transit,” the ministry stated.

Nigerians and businesses are encouraged to leverage the new service to explore trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between both countries, reinforcing the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Algeria.
