Ex-Enugu Assembly Leader Dumps PDP, Blasts Party for ‘Elevating Mediocrity’

A former Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, has tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing the party of betraying its founding principles and elevating mediocrity over competence.

In a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Udenu Local Government Area, Ezeugwu expressed deep disappointment with the party’s internal operations, saying they had become riddled with dishonesty and poor leadership choices.

“Merit was frequently sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity and deceit,” Ezeugwu wrote. “For me, trust is a fundamental aspect of any relationship, and without it, relationships can become challenging to maintain.”

Ezeugwu, who served in the Enugu State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2023 and was Assembly Leader between 2015 and 2023, added that his decision to walk away was based on principle and a loss of faith in the party’s direction.

But his resignation did not go without criticism.

Reacting to the development, former Enugu State Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Professor Victor Nnam, described Ezeugwu’s exit as opportunistic and hypocritical.

“He is just a sycophant who shouldn’t be taken seriously,” Nnam said. “If not, why is he crying foul now? Why didn’t he speak up in 2022 while still in office?”

Nnam went further to challenge Ezeugwu’s legislative achievements, noting that in 12 years as a lawmaker, the former Assembly leader’s tangible contributions to his constituency were minimal.

“As a former leader of the state assembly, what was his track record?” he asked. “So a third-term House member needs to be deceived before he can empower his own people? That’s laughable.”

He also alleged that Ezeugwu’s resignation was more about personal disappointment than principle, saying it followed the party’s refusal to back his bid for a fourth term in office.

Ezeugwu is yet to respond to the criticisms, but his departure adds to the growing list of political realignments in Enugu State, where defections and internal party wranglings have intensified in recent months.
