2027: Stop Supporting Tinubu or Face Sanctions, PDP Warns Erring Members

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to its members endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, calling such actions a breach of party rules.

In a statement on Friday, August 8, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP said it had reviewed what it described as “persistent public media outbursts” by some members who have declared support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the next general election.

“The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has reviewed the anti-party activities of certain members of the Party, particularly those endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027,” the statement read.

Ologunagba noted that the conduct of these members, especially their public expressions of support for Tinubu and willingness to work for the APC, directly contravenes the PDP constitution.

“Of serious concern is the persistent public media outbursts against our Party by some prominent members whose actions and utterances including their public declaration of support and willingness to work for the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 Presidential election in violation of the provision of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017) constitute a serious threat to the stability and sustenance of our Party,” the statement said.

He pointed to Section 10(6) of the PDP constitution, which prohibits members from aligning with rival parties or groups to undermine the PDP or its elected officials.

“Specifically, Section 10(6) of the PDP Constitution provides that ‘NO MEMBER of the Party SHALL align with other Parties or groups to undermine the Party or any of its elected government’,” Ologunagba quoted.

The PDP said such conduct has created internal divisions and weakened the party’s cohesion and electoral chances.

“Such anti-party activities have continued to impact negatively on the PDP leading to division, disaffection and heavy hemorrhaging of members with the capacity to diminish our Party’s electoral fortune if not immediately checked,” the party added.

The NWC cited Section 59(1) of the PDP constitution and issued a formal warning to the members involved, saying further defiance would attract tougher disciplinary measures.

The party also called on all members to stay committed and united, as it gears up for its national convention on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
