The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly rejected accusations that it is championing the interests of Nigeria’s northern region.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, on Sunday, August 10, the party’s national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed the claims as baseless and divisive.
“To be honest, it’s absurd, and he [Dumebi Kachikwu] ought to be ashamed of making such statements,” Abdullahi, who previously served as a minister, said on the program.
“From the very beginning, we have made it clear that ADC is not a party of the North or the South. It is not a party for Muslims or Christians, and it does not cater only to the elderly.
“This is a political platform intentionally created to shape and build the kind of future Nigerians deserve,” he explained.

The controversy began last month when former ADC presidential candidate Dumebi Kachikwu alleged that the party, recently endorsed by the opposition coalition for the 2027 general election, was being used as a vehicle to return political power to the North.
Abdullahi countered the claim by pointing to prominent party leaders from the southern region, stressing that the ADC’s composition reflects national unity.
He further alleged that elements within the government are attempting to sow discord in the party, but assured that the ADC is alert to such schemes and taking steps to resist them.
Also featured on the program, ADC stalwart Mani Ibrahim urged Nigerians to disregard Kachikwu’s remarks entirely.
“For clarity, Dumebi Kachikwu is not a member of our party (ADC), he has no mandate to speak for us, and his comments do not represent the position of the ADC,” said Ibrahim, who once chaired the party’s Board of Trustees.
