The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that children of officers who died in active service will be included in a fresh scholarship programme set to roll out in September 2026.
The initiative, created by the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), is designed to provide educational support for bereaved families while also strengthening communal bonds.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, hosted DEPOWA executives during a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, on Tuesday, the 9th of September, 2025.
He welcomed the plan, describing it as a much-needed lifeline for families left behind by fallen personnel.
During the meeting, DEPOWA President, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, disclosed that the programme will formally begin with the opening of the DEPOWA Future Leaders Academy next September. She stated that the scholarships will be directed at the “children of fallen heroes and also bolster national cohesion by admitting children from surrounding communities.”

In a release issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Musa was quoted as noting that the scheme is meant to ease both the financial and emotional struggles of families whose loved ones lost their lives in service.
She also praised officers of the Force for their commitment to combating crime and their roles in international peacekeeping missions.
Egbetokun, in his remarks, reiterated that the Police remain committed to their constitutional duties of protecting lives and property, upholding order, and defending Nigeria’s democracy.
