Onitsha Killings: Peter Obi Slams Security Outfits, Demands Accountability

The 2023 Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, has reacted to the recent attack at the Onitsha Main Market where traders, including a pregnant woman, were killed.

Reports say the incident involved a security outfit whose operatives opened fire on traders, leaving several citizens dead in Anambra’s busiest commercial centre.

In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, the 10th of September, 2025, Obi called for “thorough scrutiny, proper reorganisation, and strict accountability of those outfits.”

He stressed that the actions of the security team must not go unchecked, adding that all those behind the violence should face justice.

According to him: “It is very worrisome that already state backed outfits created to help with security situation are instead worsening the plight of the already terrorised citizens and sometimes acting even worse than the criminals they were meant to confront.

Last time, it was a different group Udo Ga-Achi Security Outfit in Anambra, that brutally assaulted a youth corper. This time, another outfit is shooting and killing innocent citizens.

We must have outfits that are well-scrutinised and do not operate outside the law.

My deepest sympathy goes to the families of the victims. May they find strength and comfort and may the departed rest in peace.”
