Trump Cancels Talks with Democrats, Cites ‘Ridiculous’ Demands on Federal Spending

President Donald Trump has canceled a planned meeting with top Democratic leaders, accusing them of making “unserious and ridiculous” demands regarding federal government funding.

The talks were originally scheduled for Thursday, September 25, 2025, and were intended to address measures to prevent a federal government shutdown set to begin on Tuesday, October 1, 2025.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Monday, September 22, 2025, Trump criticized Democrats for “threatening to shut down the Government” unless they receive “over $1 Trillion Dollars in new spending” for programs he opposes.

He emphasized that he would only participate in negotiations if some of his conditions were met.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries had called on the president to engage in direct talks, citing reluctance from Republican congressional leaders to enter bipartisan negotiations.

Key points of contention include healthcare funding, with Democrats advocating for increased subsidies under the Affordable Care Act and the restoration of Medicaid cuts affecting low-income Americans.

Although the Republican Party holds majorities in both chambers, 53 of 100 Senate seats and 219 of 432 House seats, efforts to pass federal funding legislation have stalled.

A Republican-backed House resolution failed in the Senate, while Democratic proposals also lack sufficient support.

The cancellation has heightened partisan tensions as the October 1 deadline nears.

Democrats criticized the president’s decision, saying it undermines efforts to prevent a government shutdown and address urgent issues, including healthcare access.

As of now, there is no indication that Trump plans to reschedule the meeting or continue negotiations with Democratic leaders, while lawmakers on both sides continue to debate potential solutions.
