The Lagos State Safety Commission, LSC, has shut down several chemical factories and retail outlets in Ojota for violating safety and environmental regulations.
In a statement to journalists, the Commission said the enforcement exercise took place over the weekend under the supervision of its Director-General, Mr. Lanre Mojola, in line with the Lagos State Safety Commission Law of 2011.
Mojola explained that the affected sites were sealed after operators continued to ignore agreed safety procedures, despite multiple warnings and the expiration of a grace period.
He revealed that inspections had earlier been conducted at the factories, followed by meetings with the executives of the chemical dealers’ association.
During these engagements, operators signed a letter of undertaking on the 9th of May, 2025, pledging to comply with specific safety standards.
The commitments included carrying out a comprehensive safety audit of the market, organising hazard identification and risk assessment workshops, providing shops with working fire extinguishers, and keeping an up-to-date inventory of all chemicals, including their expiry dates.

Other agreed steps involved the use of personal protective equipment, installation of safety signage and chemical labels, availability of Safety Data Sheets, and the development of disaster management and business continuity plans.
“Despite the expiration of the ultimatum, the chemical dealers failed to honour the agreements reached with the Commission. This left us with no option but to seal the facilities to safeguard lives and property,” Mojola said.
He added that the affected premises would remain closed until operators fully meet the required safety standards.
Mojola also warned manufacturers and business owners across Lagos to adopt proactive safety measures to prevent similar enforcement actions.
