Residents of Wawa Cantonment in Niger State were thrown into mourning following a tragic incident in which a soldier allegedly shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.
This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by its Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Stephen Nwachukwu.
Nwachukwu noted that Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving at 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, is suspected to have committed the act on Saturday.
“The tragic incident which occurred on 11 October 2025 at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, has caused a tensed atmosphere, leaving the barracks residents in shock as to the circumstances that could have led to such unfortunate incident,” the statement partly read.
According to the Army, the bodies of Lance Corporal Femi and his wife were discovered in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the cantonment.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the soldier had been on duty at the time and had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before returning.
