Tragedy struck at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, as a Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, reportedly died from severe burns after being set ablaze by his wife during a domestic altercation.
The incident, which occurred on September 22, 2025, was brought to public attention by counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the details in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
According to Makama, sources revealed that the late officer, who also served as a medical doctor and Regimental Medical Officer with the 6 Battalion, had engaged in a heated argument with his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna.
The confrontation allegedly escalated when she poured petrol on him and set him on fire.

Lt. Haruna was said to have been rushed to the Military Reference Section within the barracks for initial treatment before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further care. Despite extensive medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
Reports indicate that the suspect has been apprehended and is currently in custody as investigations into the disturbing incident continue.
