The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Chairman (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following a rigorous screening session at the National Assembly.
The confirmation, which took place on Thursday, October 16, 2025, came after more than two hours of questioning by senators, who sought his views on electoral credibility, institutional reforms, and transparency in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Professor Amupitan, aged 58, was nominated earlier this month by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and subsequently endorsed by the National Council of State.
During his screening, the legal scholar outlined his vision for INEC, promising to restore public trust in elections, strengthen technology-driven voting processes, and uphold the independence of the commission.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and seasoned academic, Amupitan has taught law for over three decades and previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos.
His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria’s electoral administration, as he becomes the sixth substantive INEC Chairman, succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure officially ended earlier this month.
Amupitan is expected to lead upcoming electoral reforms and prepare the commission for the 2027 general elections, with emphasis on voter confidence, institutional integrity, and transparent electoral conduct.
