Professor Joash Amupitan has pledged to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to identify the challenges that hindered the 2023 general elections and propose lasting reforms.
Amupitan made this known on Thursday during his screening before the Senate.
He explained that the audit would focus on INEC’s logistics and operations, adding that recommendations would be developed in partnership with key stakeholders to improve future elections.
Citing a Supreme Court ruling, Amupitan clarified misconceptions surrounding INEC’s Results Viewing Portal (IREV).

“A lot of people thought it was part of the results collation system but the Supreme Court said it is not,” he said, adding that the distinction was not clearly communicated to the public before the 2023 elections.
He also emphasised the urgent need for the establishment of an electoral offences commission to handle investigations and prosecutions related to electoral misconduct.
“INEC does not have the capacity for investigation and prosecution at the moment,” he said.
