Obi to INEC’s Amupitan: Power is Temporary, Protect Your Name

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged the nominated Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Omupitan, to safeguard his integrity by ensuring transparent and fair elections.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, the 15th of October, 2025, in Abuja, Obi said the nominee, whose confirmation is pending before the Senate, must stay committed to fairness and accountability throughout his tenure to leave behind a worthy legacy.

He emphasized that Amupitan should always remember that his time in office would not last forever and that he would eventually be judged by the choices he makes as the nation’s electoral chief.

“It is for the good of everybody. None of us is going to be here forever and none is going to be in his position forever.

“So, whatever position we find ourselves in, it’s to do the right thing. So I wish him well.
“When he (Amupitan) is confirmed, I will congratulate him and tell him to know that one day, he’s going to leave that post. Let him ensure that he keeps his reputation,” he said.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, added that Nigerians had endured enough flawed elections and deserved a commission capable of delivering credible polls without controversy.
