A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, Festus Sunday, has applauded Governor Douye Diri’s decision to resign from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as a bold and forward-thinking move that reflects true statesmanship.

Governor Diri announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday, a development that has sparked reactions across political circles in the state.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday in Yenagoa, Sunday said the governor’s decision was “one of the best things to happen to Bayelsa,” adding that it demonstrated his deep understanding of Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

“Political parties are vehicles for elections, and Diri’s decision shows maturity and a clear grasp of the political weather in the country,” Sunday stated.

He described Diri’s expected defection to the APC as a “homecoming,” assuring that the party leadership would warmly welcome him and his supporters.

“Coming to the All Progressives Congress will be homecoming for Diri and his team, and I, alongside other leaders of the party, will stand resolutely to welcome them,” he said.

The APC stalwart further noted that Diri’s entry into the ruling party would “carry significant weight in shaping the fortunes of Bayelsa State,” strengthening ties with the federal government and advancing the administration’s prosperity agenda.

He praised Diri as a “peaceful, accommodating, and bipartisan leader” who has governed inclusively and urged Bayelsans to respect his right to freedom of association.

“To those who wish to remain in the PDP to play opposition politics, it is their constitutional right. But the interest of Bayelsa must come before personal interest,” he added.

Sunday also appealed to citizens to continue supporting the governor for the state’s sustained development and unity.
