A former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has formally declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Lamido made the announcement in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Monday, saying he would visit the party’s national secretariat in Abuja to purchase his nomination form.

“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of National Chairman,” Lamido wrote.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his commitment to rebuilding and strengthening the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that his “resolve to restore the party to its old glory is unstoppable.”

Lamido’s declaration comes as the PDP prepares to elect new national officers at its elective national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The contest for the top party position is already heightening internal tensions, following an earlier endorsement of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as the northern consensus candidate. However, Lamido and a faction loyal to former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, insisting the process lacked proper consultation.

During its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on August 25 in Abuja, the PDP resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, while reserving the position of National Chairman for the North.

In preparation for the convention, the PDP on October 25 named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee chaired by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a former Ondo State governorship candidate, to vet aspirants for national offices. The screening is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

Lamido’s entry into the race is expected to further reshape internal alignments within the opposition party, as stakeholders jostle for influence ahead of the convention and the 2027 polls.
