YIAGA Africa Urges INEC to Deliver Credible Anambra Governorship Election

Civic organisation YIAGA Africa has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a transparent and credible process in the Anambra governorship election holding Saturday, November 8, 2025.

In a pre-election statement issued on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in Abuja, and signed by Executive Director Samson Itodo and Election Mission Chair Dr Asmau Maikudi, the group described the poll as a crucial test of INEC’s integrity and capacity to restore public trust in Nigeria’s elections.

“At stake is not just an election, but the integrity of our democracy,” Itodo said. “INEC and the security agencies must guarantee a process that is transparent, secure and reflective of the people’s will.”

YIAGA Africa called for timely deployment of materials, early opening of polling units, and transparent result collation.

It also urged security agencies to remain professional and neutral, and to act decisively against vote-buying, intimidation or disruptions.

The organisation appealed to voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards, arrive early at polling stations, and resist inducements.

Itodo noted that a credible election depends on citizens’ participation and vigilance.

The Anambra election, the first major off-cycle governorship poll since 2023, is viewed as a benchmark for INEC’s operational readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Founded in 2007, YIAGA Africa promotes citizen participation and electoral accountability through research, advocacy and election observation across Nigeria.
