Iworiso-Markson: True Change in Nigeria Begins with Power of the Vote

Publisher of First Daily newspaper, Dr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, has called on Nigerians to take greater ownership of the democratic process, stressing that real change will only come when citizens recognize and exercise the true power of their vote.

Speaking at the Fifth-Anniversary Public Lecture of First Daily, themed “How Can We Make Our Votes Count?”, Dr. Iworiso-Markson lamented the failure of successive promises of reform to translate into tangible progress for the nation.

“For decades, promises of reform have failed us,” he said. “True change in Nigeria begins with citizens who understand the power of their vote. Democracy does not end at the polling booth; it lives in every informed choice we make.”

The publisher emphasized that active citizenship goes beyond election seasons, urging Nigerians to demand accountability from leaders and engage consistently in governance processes.

He further noted that strengthening democracy requires an informed electorate, transparency in electoral processes, and the courage to challenge systems that undermine the people’s will.

The event, which drew participants from media, civil society, academia, and politics, examined practical ways to enhance voter education, reduce electoral apathy, and ensure that votes truly reflect the people’s choices.

Speakers commended First Daily for its role in deepening democratic discourse through responsible journalism and public enlightenment.
