PRP Slams Turaki Over ‘Reckless’ Call for Trump’s Intervention

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has sharply criticized Tanimu Turaki, factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for asking former U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria, calling the appeal “reckless and unpatriotic.”

Turaki made the request on November 18, 2025, after gaining access to the PDP national secretariat in Abuja following a tense standoff between rival party factions.

Speaking to journalists, he warned that Nigeria’s democracy is at risk, describing the situation as “not just genocide against Nigerian Christians.”

The PRP responded the following day, on November 19, 2025, urging Turaki to withdraw his statement.

The party said inviting foreign involvement in domestic political disputes undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty and democratic process, insisting that such issues must be resolved internally.

The factional battle within the PDP has intensified since Turaki’s election at the Ibadan convention in mid-November, which was rejected by rival leaders, including Nyesom Wike and Samuel Anyanwu.

Clashes between supporters disrupted the party secretariat on 18 November, with police firing tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Rival PDP leaders have dismissed Turaki’s claims, describing them as inflammatory and politically motivated.

Meanwhile, the crisis has drawn wider attention, prompting discussions about the limits of party disputes and the dangers of seeking external intervention.

The controversy highlights the fragility of internal party cohesion and the risks of framing domestic political challenges as crises that require foreign involvement.
