The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, has stepped down from the Technical Committee spearheading the campaign for the creation of Anioma State, following fresh disagreements over efforts to shift the proposed state capital away from Asaba.
His decision, disclosed recently through a statement issued by his Personal Secretary, Dr. Jude Mgbeze, was prompted by what he described as widening differences over boundary definitions and alleged internal attempts to undermine Asaba’s historic role in the process.
According to the statement, the monarch believes there are “clandestine attempts” within the committee that conflict with his duty to protect the cultural and territorial integrity of his kingdom.
“He cannot be seen to preside over decisions that would lead to the liquidation or decimation of his kingdom,” the statement added, stressing his obligation to defend Asaba’s interests.

Although reaffirming his long-standing support for the creation of Anioma State, the Asagba maintained that any such effort must align with the historically recognised Anioma identity and structure.
Following his withdrawal, the committee named the Obuzor of Igbuzor, Prof. Louis Chelunor Nwaoboshi, as its new chairman, in a move aimed at sustaining momentum as consultations continue across Delta communities.
The development has intensified discussions across the region, with stakeholders assessing how the internal rift could influence the broader statehood campaign.
