The International Press Institute Nigeria added Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, and Inspector‑General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to its “Book of Infamy” on December 2, 2025, citing repeated violations of press freedom.
The institute said the officials took actions that directly restrict journalists’ work, including shutting down media outlets, expelling reporters, and harassment.
Governor Bago was cited for ordering the closure of Badeggi FM 90.1 in Minna on August 1, 2025, after broadcasts he deemed objectionable.
Governor Eno was blacklisted for expelling a Channels Television correspondent and cameraman from the Akwa Ibom Government House on May 24, 2025, following coverage of his political defection.

IGP Egbetokun was listed for continued police harassment and intimidation of journalists throughout 2025.
IPI Nigeria President Musikilu Mojeed said the Book of Infamy serves as a warning that repression of the media will not be tolerated and that the officials may face heightened scrutiny until corrective measures are taken.
The move has drawn calls from human rights and media groups for public officials to respect journalists’ constitutional rights, warning that further violations could undermine democratic accountability and press independence.
