Lagos Govt Shuts Down Popular Victoria Island Eatery Over Wastewater Violations

Authorities in Lagos have closed Yakoyo Abula Joint, a well-known restaurant in Victoria Island, after it was found to be discharging untreated wastewater and grease directly into public drainage channels.

Officials from the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office carried out the enforcement on Tuesday morning, sealing the premises after an inspection revealed that the restaurant had been releasing effluents—including fats and oils—into nearby drains.

The illegal discharge was said to have caused blockages and posed serious health risks to people living and working in the area.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development in a statement posted on his X handle.

He said the restaurant, located at 134 Sinari Daranijo Street, had been repeatedly polluting its surroundings in violation of state environmental regulations.

According to Wahab, the closure aligns with the state’s ongoing #ZeroToleranceLagos initiative—a comprehensive enforcement drive aimed at ensuring full compliance with wastewater disposal standards across eateries, hotels, and other commercial establishments.

He added that the government remains committed to cracking down on any facility whose activities threaten public health or undermine environmental safety.

The restaurant will remain sealed pending full remediation and compliance with the state’s wastewater management requirements.
