NRC Announces 50% Fare Cut for Christmas, New Year Travel

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced a 50 per cent cut in train fares across its services as part of efforts to reduce travel costs during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The fare reduction, which began on Tuesday 23 Dec, will remain in effect until 4 Jan 2026.

It covers both standard-gauge and narrow-gauge operations nationwide, including busy routes such as Lagos–Ibadan and Abuja–Kaduna.

NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, said the decision was taken to cushion the impact of increased transportation expenses typically experienced during the festive period.

He added that the initiative is also designed to promote rail travel as a safe, dependable and cost-effective option for Nigerians.

According to the corporation, passenger traffic has increased since the discount was introduced, with several train services experiencing strong demand.

The NRC also disclosed that enhanced security, safety and customer service measures have been deployed across stations and trains to accommodate the rise in passenger numbers.

The initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s wider efforts to support citizens during the festive season by making public transportation more affordable and accessible.
