A cyclist lost his life on Monday following a collision with a DAF articulated truck along Airport Road, Ikeja, Lagos State.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident occurred under the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Bridge at the traffic signal corridor.
Both the cyclist and the truck were reportedly coming from the Maryland axis when the cyclist failed to maintain a safe distance from the heavy-duty vehicle.
“Preliminary findings indicate that as both the cyclist and the truck attempted to negotiate the roundabout under the bridge, the cyclist could not maintain a safe clearance and was fatally crushed,” LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department head, Adebayo Taofiq, said in a statement via X.
LASTMA operatives at the scene quickly intercepted the truck driver, who had attempted to flee, and handed him over to the Ikeja Police Division for investigation and prosecution.

Officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) were called to remove the deceased and ensure smooth traffic flow.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged cyclists and commercial motorbike riders to exercise caution, adhere to traffic rules, and avoid high-risk roads.
“The Lagos State Government continues to conduct road safety awareness campaigns for cyclists and other vulnerable road users, encouraging them to restrict movements to safer inner roads,” Giwa said.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and protecting all road users, appealing to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to comply with traffic laws to prevent avoidable accidents.
