Atiku Mourns Singer Market Fire Victims, Urges Expanded Relief

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed sympathy with traders and families affected by the devastating fire at Singer Market in Kano, describing the incident as a profound tragedy that has disrupted livelihoods and deepened hardship.

In a statement shared via his official X account on Sunday, Atiku said his heart goes out to all those impacted by the inferno, particularly traders who lost goods and sources of income.

“The anguish of losing one’s means of livelihood in such a tragic manner is profound, and I stand in solidarity with all who have been impacted,” he wrote.

Singer Market, one of Kano’s prominent commercial hubs, reportedly suffered extensive damage following the outbreak, leaving many business owners counting their losses.

Atiku commended the Kano State Government for its immediate on-the-ground intervention and support efforts, noting that such actions provide hope in a period of distress.

“I commend the ongoing efforts of the Kano State Government to provide immediate intervention and support to victims. Such actions offer hope in a period of deep distress,” he stated.

However, the former presidential candidate urged authorities to go beyond immediate response by expanding relief measures to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation and the implementation of stronger preventive mechanisms to protect markets from future disasters.

“In times like this, leadership must translate compassion into sustained action,” he added.

The fire incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of major commercial centres to emergencies, sparking calls for improved safety standards, infrastructure upgrades and coordinated disaster response systems to protect traders and their investments.
