Nine Govs Defect to APC, Redrawing Nigeria’s Political Map Ahead of 2027

The reported defection of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to the All Progressives Congress (APC) marks the latest and perhaps most symbolic shift in a growing political realignment sweeping across Nigeria.

Fintiri’s move adds to a wave of sitting governors who, between 2025 and early 2026, have crossed from opposition platforms to the ruling party, significantly altering the balance of power ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With his defection, the number of governors reported to have joined the APC during this period now stands at nine.

The Nine Governors

Those reported to have crossed to the APC include:

Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta)

Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom)

Peter Mbah (Enugu)

Douye Diri (Bayelsa)

Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau)

Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers)

Agbu Kefas (Taraba)

Abba Yusuf (Kano), who moved from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)

Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa)

Most of the governors were originally elected under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), long regarded as Nigeria’s leading opposition force.

A Dramatic Shift in the Political Map

The cumulative effect of these defections is significant. The APC now controls the overwhelming majority of Nigeria’s 36 states, consolidating its dominance at both federal and state levels under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Governors remain powerful political actors. They command grassroots party structures, influence state assemblies, and shape electoral mobilization. Their alignment with the ruling party carries both symbolic and strategic weight, especially, with 2027 approaching.

Supporters within the APC argue the defections reflect confidence in the federal administration and a desire for smoother coordination between states and Abuja.

Critics, however, question the broader implications for multiparty democracy.

Debate Over Mandate and Accountability

Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of association, making defections legally permissible. Yet the political debate extends beyond legality.

When governors elected on one platform switch allegiance midterm, questions arise about the mandate granted by voters. Does that mandate belong to the individual officeholder, or to the party under which they campaigned?

Political analysts remain divided. Some see pragmatic realignment in a fluid political environment. Others view the trend as potentially weakening opposition strength and competitive balance.

Eyes on 2027

For the PDP and other opposition parties, the loss of multiple sitting governors presents a strategic challenge. Governors anchor state-level structures and influence national party dynamics.

At the same time, Nigerian politics has a history of reinvention and coalition-building. Whether the current consolidation represents long-term dominance or a prelude to another realignment remains uncertain.

What is clear is that with nine governors, most recently Fintiri, crossing to the APC, Nigeria’s political map has been redrawn in ways that could shape the trajectory of the 2027 elections.

The next chapter will not be written in press conferences, but at the ballot box.
