Osafile Stella, the lone opposition lawmaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has revealed that she has endured repeated mockery following her decision to leave the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) instead of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
She made this known while speaking with journalists after Monday’s plenary session at the Assembly complex, on the 16th of February, 2026.
According to her, the criticism has been consistent, but she considers it part of the political terrain, noting that public office demands resilience.
“Of course, there are taunts, but in politics you must develop a thick skin. Without that, it is difficult to move forward,” she said.
Responding to enquiries about whether the ADC has assured her of an automatic ticket for the next election, Stella stated that her political moves are guided primarily by the interests and wishes of the people she represents.
She maintained that the ADC is not a new platform, stressing that it already possesses established structures.
“The ADC is well established. The structures are there. My people encouraged me to take this step. It was the constituents I represent who asked me to move to the ADC,” she explained.
Speaking on religion and governance, Stella reiterated that Nigeria runs a secular system where political engagement transcends faith affiliations.
“Your personality will always reflect in how you play politics. After God’s authority comes government, so you cannot distance yourself from it,” she said.

The lawmaker, who chairs the House Committee on Wealth Creation and Employment, also rejected claims that being in the opposition has led to unfair treatment within the Assembly.
She commended the Speaker, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, describing him as professional and unbiased in handling legislative responsibilities.
“When I campaigned, I emphasised capacity, competence and character. I believe the Speaker understands his role and assigns responsibilities appropriately. I have not experienced any form of discrimination,” Stella said.
“Beyond party politics, he is committed to governance. He has given me the space to function and has consistently set aside party differences to uphold the Constitution,” she added.
