Sanwo-Olu Names Adetola John As Lagos Accountant-General

The Lagos State Government has appointed Adetola Muyiwa John as the state’s new Accountant-General following the statutory retirement of his predecessor.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the redeployment, which was announced on the state government’s official Facebook page on Tuesday, March 3.

John, who previously served as State Auditor-General, will now oversee the State Treasury Office as both Accountant-General and Permanent Secretary.

The appointment follows the retirement of Dr. Abiodun Muritala, who held the position until his statutory exit from service.

According to a circular from the Office of the Head of Service, the redeployment took effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.

“The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has approved the deployment of Mr. Adetola, Muyiwa John, as the new Accountant-General of the State and Permanent Secretary, State Treasury Office,” the government said in the statement.

“The redeployment follows the statutory retirement of the outgoing Accountant-General/Permanent Secretary, Dr. Abiodun Muritala.”

The Head of Service, Bode Agoro, congratulated John on his new appointment and called on stakeholders to support a smooth transition.

“The redeployment, according to the circular, takes immediate effect from Monday, March 2, 2026,” the statement noted, adding that Agoro urged all parties “to accord the circular the necessary publicity and cooperation to ensure a seamless transition.”

The government described the appointment as part of its broader commitment to efficiency and accountability in managing public finances.

“This strategic redeployment underscores the State Government’s commitment to maintaining efficiency, accountability, and continuity in public financial management,” the statement said.
