Protesters Storm NRS Over Director Appointments

Protesters on Monday stormed the headquarters of the Nigerian Revenue Service in Abuja to demand a review of recent executive director appointments, citing alleged violations of statutory provisions.

The demonstration was organised by the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens, whose members gathered in front of the agency to call for adherence to the Nigerian Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025.

Addressing journalists, the group’s leader, Amande Solomon, said the coalition had reviewed the appointments and found that five of the six newly appointed Executive Directors did not comply with the Act’s provisions.

“We are calling for adherence to the rule of law and due process in the appointment of Executive Directors at the Service,” Solomon said. He cited Section 17(1) of the Act, which mandates that six Executive Directors represent the geopolitical zones on a rotational basis, with the Executive Chairman and an Executive Director coming from different states.

According to Solomon, the recent appointments did not align with the rotational requirements. He noted that nominees should have emerged from Adamawa State (North-East), Benue State (North-Central), Jigawa State (North-West), Abia State (South-East), and Ekiti State (South-West), instead of the states currently represented. He acknowledged that the South-South appointment was consistent with the Act.

Members of the coalition submitted a letter outlining their concerns to the agency after initial restrictions by security personnel were lifted. Solomon urged the Executive Chairman Zacch Adedeji to review the appointments in line with the law and said the group expects a response within two weeks.

“Their action is aimed at strengthening adherence to due process and promoting public confidence in governance,” Solomon added.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Revenue Service had not responded to the protesters’ demands.
