A school teacher in Kebbi State, Abduljalal Usman, has reportedly been suspended for three months without pay after allegedly refusing a Ramadan palliative distributed by the state government and publicly criticising governance in the state.
Usman, who teaches in the Dandi Local Government Education Authority, was said to have declined a relief package consisting of “one mudu of maize and one mudu of millet” offered to residents as part of a Ramadan support programme.
Sources familiar with the situation said the teacher’s refusal of the items and his outspoken comments about governance in the state drew the attention of authorities, leading to disciplinary action.
A suspension letter issued by the local education authority reportedly accused Usman of “negligence of duty,” although the document did not specify the exact action that constituted the alleged misconduct.
The development has sparked debate among observers and civil society advocates, some of whom argue that the teacher is being punished for declining the government’s relief package and expressing his views about the state’s leadership under Governor Nasir Idris.

Critics of the decision described the suspension as excessive, questioning whether refusing a palliative package or criticising governance should warrant disciplinary measures against a public school teacher.
One source familiar with the case alleged that the action reflected broader concerns about governance and the treatment of public workers.
Observers have also pointed out the irony that Governor Idris himself once worked as a classroom teacher before entering politics.
Supporters of Usman say teachers and other public servants should not face sanctions for expressing opinions on governance, particularly during a period of economic hardship when public discourse about leadership and welfare policies has intensified.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities in Kebbi State had not issued a detailed public explanation clarifying the circumstances that led to the suspension.
The incident has nevertheless raised questions about freedom of expression and the relationship between public officials and government welfare programmes during the Ramadan season.
