Extended Blackout To Disrupt Amuwo-Odofin As Grid Upgrade Kicks Off

Residents and businesses in Amuwo-Odofin are set for a prolonged disruption in electricity supply following the planned shutdown of a major power facility serving the area.

The outage was announced on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, by Ikeja Electric, which said maintenance work on the 132kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation will begin on Thursday, March 19, 2026, and run until Thursday, July 30, 2026.

The upgrade, to be carried out in conjunction with the Transmission Company of Nigeria, is aimed at strengthening the substation and improving long-term power stability across the network.

However, the exercise is expected to significantly impact electricity supply to several parts of Amuwo-Odofin and adjoining areas.

Key feeders to be affected include 11-AmuwoINJ-T1 and T2, which supply sections of Old Ojo Road, Ijesha Expressway, and Jakande I and II, as well as the 33-AmuwoTCN lines serving Amukoko and parts of Hongxing I and II.

Residents in these locations are likely to experience intermittent outages or complete loss of supply during the maintenance period.

Power sector authorities said the shutdown is necessary to safely execute the upgrade, noting that high-voltage infrastructure cannot be serviced while energised.

They urged customers to make alternative arrangements, particularly businesses dependent on steady electricity, while assuring that efforts will be made to limit disruptions where possible.

The Amuwo substation is a critical node in Lagos’s electricity network, stepping down high-voltage transmission supply for distribution to homes and businesses.

Its upgrade is expected to enhance system reliability and reduce the frequency of unplanned outages in the long term, despite the immediate inconvenience to consumers.
