The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has urged the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to prioritise welfare initiatives targeted at junior-ranking officers, highlighting their central role in frontline security operations across the country.
Disu made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the Fund’s Executive Secretary, Mohammed Sheidu, and members of its Board of Directors at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting served as a platform for both institutions to deepen collaboration aimed at strengthening policing reforms and enhancing operational efficiency nationwide.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the police chief emphasised that junior officers shoulder the bulk of operational responsibilities, often working under demanding conditions that require consistent institutional support.
He stressed the need for structured and sustained welfare programmes, noting that improved living conditions, access to quality healthcare, and timely disbursement of insurance and welfare benefits are critical to boosting morale and professionalism within the Force.

Disu also reiterated his commitment to building a modern, technology-driven, and citizen-focused police system, anchored on strong partnerships with key institutions like the Trust Fund.
In his remarks, Sheidu reaffirmed the Fund’s dedication to supporting the Nigeria Police through targeted interventions in welfare, training, and infrastructure.
He outlined key achievements, including the execution of over 170 infrastructure projects and the training of more than 13,000 officers through over 100 programmes nationwide.
He added that the Fund remains focused on improving operational readiness, upgrading facilities, and aligning its initiatives with the evolving needs of the police.
The engagement comes amid ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force, with increasing emphasis on improving personnel welfare, especially for officers at the lower ranks who form the backbone of day-to-day policing activities.
