Barcelona edged closer to extending their La Liga lead over Real Madrid after a narrow 1-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou on Sunday, with Ronald Araujo’s header proving decisive. The win boosts the Catalans’ advantage at the top of the table to seven points. Later, Alvaro Arbeloa’s Real Madrid will host Atletico Madrid, who sit fourth, in a high-stakes derby.
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Araujo connected with Joao Cancelo’s precise corner to head the ball home. However, goalkeeper Joan Garcia’s outstanding performance was equally crucial, keeping Rayo at bay with several top-class saves.
Barcelona, under Hansi Flick, were initially caught off guard, but Garcia denied Carlos Martin from close range in the opening stages.
The goalkeeper, recently called up to the Spanish national team by Luis de la Fuente, continued to frustrate the visitors throughout the match, particularly as Rayo dominated possession in the second half.
At the other end, Raphinha struggled to convert opportunities, missing several chances after capitalizing on Pathe Ciss’s error. Teenage star Lamine Yamal also drew attention when he was seemingly fouled by Ciss inside the area, but the referee waved away Barcelona’s appeals.

Yamal later delivered a superb outside-of-the-foot cross, creating another opening for Raphinha, though the Brazilian’s attempt was tipped over by Augusto Batalla.
Araujo’s goal marked a notable return after a period of limited appearances following a mental health break late last year. He had also come off the bench in Barcelona’s 7-2 Champions League demolition of Newcastle earlier in the week.
With Eric Garcia rested due to a muscle overload, Flick deployed Araujo at right-back, a move that immediately paid dividends.
After halftime, Barcelona threatened again when Yamal’s low shot skidded across the face of goal. Rayo then gained momentum, producing a series of dangerous chances.
Joan Garcia kept the Catalans ahead with crucial interventions, denying efforts from Alvaro Garcia and Unai Lopez. Pacha Espino had a golden opportunity to level the score but curled his shot over the bar after getting behind Barcelona’s high defensive line.
In stoppage time, Garcia produced another key save from Jorge de Frutos to preserve the clean sheet. Despite sustained pressure from Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona held firm to secure the three points and consolidate their position atop the La Liga standings.
