Police officers in Abuja marked National Police Day on Monday with a street sanitation exercise aimed at strengthening ties with the community and improving public perception.

The initiative took place around Area One Motor Park and nearby streets, where officers were seen sweeping, clearing waste, and engaging directly with residents. The exercise extended to a nearby market, creating a visible impact across the area.

Beyond cleaning, some officers assisted residents with everyday tasks such as washing clothes, while the Commissioner of Police even operated a trader’s sewing machine actions that sparked excitement and applause from onlookers.

Speaking on the initiative, the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, explained that the outreach was part of programmes introduced by the Inspector-General of Police to promote closer interaction between officers and the public.

He noted that the activities include community engagement, medical outreach, and environmental sanitation, all designed to show that the police are part of the society they serve.

Sanusi added that the exercise was not only about cleanliness but also about presenting a more approachable and service-oriented image of the police force.

Reacting to the warm reception from residents, he said the positive response reflected growing trust and acceptance of the police within the community, assuring that officers would continue to improve their services.

The sanitation exercise forms part of a broader lineup of activities organised by the Nigeria Police to commemorate this year’s National Police Day, with a focus on community engagement and better police-public relations.

The initiative also aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police for commands nationwide to undertake outreach programmes, including medical services and environmental sanitation.
