Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to unite in defence of the country’s democracy, warning against any drift toward a one-party system.
In a statement shared via his X account on Wednesday, Obi said members and leaders of the African Democratic Congress, alongside other Nigerians committed to democratic values, are determined to resist actions that could undermine the nation’s political diversity.
He emphasised that democracy thrives on plurality, inclusiveness, and active citizen participation, stressing that any attempt to weaken opposition voices poses a risk to national stability.
Obi urged citizens who believe in unity, peace, and security to stand up and actively support efforts aimed at safeguarding democratic institutions.

“We are saying that our democracy must not be killed. We say no to a one-party system,” he stated, calling for collective action to preserve the nation’s democratic space.
The former Anambra State governor’s remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and concerns raised by opposition figures over the state of Nigeria’s democratic processes ahead of future elections.
He concluded by reiterating his belief in a better Nigeria, urging citizens to remain hopeful and engaged in shaping the country’s political future.
